History and Origin of Ludo

Ludo in India: From Pachisi to Chaupar

Ludo is derived from an ancient Indian game called Pachisi, which was created in the 6th century CE. The earliest evidence of this game's evolution in India is the depiction of boards on the caves of Ellora. The original version was played on a cloth board with four arms shaped like a cross. Each arm had three columns of squares, usually six per column. The center of the board formed a large square called the home space. Each player had four tokens of one color and a set of dice made from cowrie shells.

Pachisi was a game of strategy and luck that was played by Indian maharajas and emperors. It was also known as Chaupar in some regions. One of the most famous examples of Pachisi being played was by the Mughal emperor Akbar, who used real people as tokens on a life-sized board in his palaces Ludo in England: From Pachisi to Ludo

In the late 19th century, Pachisi was introduced to England by the British who had colonized India. The game was modified and simplified to suit the Western tastes and preferences. The board was made smaller and square, the number of pieces was reduced to four per player, and the cowrie shells were replaced by a single cubic die. The game was patented by Alfred Collier in 1896 under the name Ludo, which means "I play" in Latin. Ludo became a popular game among children and families in England and other parts of the world. It was also marketed under different names, such as Parcheesi in America, Petits Chevaux in France, and Mensch ärgere Dich nicht in Germany.

Ludo in Nigeria: From Ludo to Naija Ludo

Ludo was brought to Nigeria by the British during the colonial era. It soon became a favorite game among Nigerians of all ages and backgrounds. Ludo was played with different rules and variations, depending on the region and culture. Some of these variations include using two dice instead of one, allowing multiple pieces to occupy the same square, adding barriers and safe-houses to the board, and giving bonus rolls for capturing or reaching certain squares. Ludo was also known by different names, such as Draft in Hausa, Kpada in Yoruba, and Nkwe in Igbo.

In 2019, a Nigerian developer named Anthony Ezema created a mobile app called Naija Ludo APK, which is a digital version of the Nigerian Ludo game. The app features colorful boards inspired by Nigerian fabrics, such as Ankara, Aso Oke, Adire, Kente, and more. It also has Nigerian music and sound effects that make you feel like you are playing in a real Nigerian party. You can play with your friends online or offline, or challenge yourself against the computer. You can also customize your tokens with different shapes and colors.

Moving and Capturing Tokens

A token can only enter the board when you roll a six on the dice. You can place it on your starting square (the colored square next to your yard). If you roll another six, you can either move the same token six steps forward or bring another token out of your yard. You can have up to four tokens on the board at a time.

You can move your tokens clockwise around the board along the track (the path of squares not part of any player's home column). You can move your token as many steps as the number shown on the dice. If you roll a double (two dice showing the same number), you get an extra turn.

You can capture your opponent's token if you land on a square that is occupied by their token. The captured token is sent back to their yard and has to start over. You can also capture multiple tokens if they are stacked on the same square. However, you cannot capture a token if it is on a safe-house (a colored square with a star) or if it is on its home column (the column of squares leading to its home). Capturing an opponent's token gives you another turn.

Winning and Scoring

To win the game, you have to move all your tokens to your home before anyone else does. To do this, you have to enter your home column (the column of squares of your color) from the square below it. You can only enter your home column if you roll the exact number required to reach it. For example, if your token is three steps away from your home column, you have to roll a three to enter it.

Once you enter your home column, you have to move your token up the column to reach your home (the center space of your color). Again, you have to roll the exact number required to reach each square on the column. For example, if your token is on the second square of your home column, you have to roll a two to reach your home. If you roll more than the number required, you have to skip your turn.

The first player to move all their tokens to their home wins the game. The game ends when there is only one player left with tokens on the board. The winner gets 10 points, the second place gets 5 points, the third place gets 3 points, and the fourth place gets 1 point. You can also play a series of games and keep track of your total score.
