How to Build Your Own Line Array Speaker System with 8-Inch Drivers
A line array speaker system is a type of loudspeaker that consists of multiple identical drivers arranged in a vertical or horizontal line. This configuration allows the sound waves to combine constructively, resulting in a more uniform coverage and higher sound pressure level than a conventional speaker. Line array speakers are commonly used for large-scale sound reinforcement applications, such as concerts, festivals, and stadiums.

However, line array speakers can also be built for personal or home use, with some advantages over traditional speakers. For example, line array speakers can produce a more consistent sound quality across different listening positions, reduce room reflections and reverberation, and offer more flexibility in placement and orientation. Moreover, line array speakers can be customized to suit your preferences and needs, such as the size, shape, frequency response, and power handling of the drivers.
In this article, we will show you how to build your own line array speaker system with 8-inch drivers, which are suitable for mid-range and high-frequency reproduction. We will also provide you with a link to download the PDF plans for the project, which include detailed instructions, diagrams, and measurements. By following these steps, you will be able to create a DIY line array speaker system that can rival some of the professional models on the market.
What You Will Need
To build your own line array speaker system with 8-inch drivers, you will need the following materials and tools:
16 8-inch full-range drivers (we recommend the Dayton Audio PS220-8 Point Source Full Range Speaker Driver)
8 MDF boards (18 mm thick, 60 cm wide, 120 cm long)
Wood glue
Screws
Speaker wire
Binding posts
Soldering iron and solder
Drill and drill bits
Jigsaw
Circular saw
Router and router bits
Sanding paper
Paint or veneer (optional)
Step 1: Cut the MDF Boards
The first step is to cut the MDF boards into the required pieces for the speaker cabinets. You will need to cut four pieces for each cabinet: two side panels (60 cm x 120 cm), one front panel (60 cm x 60 cm), and one back panel (60 cm x 60 cm). You can use a circular saw or a jigsaw to cut the MDF boards. Make sure to measure and mark the boards carefully before cutting them.
Step 2: Cut the Driver Holes
The next step is to cut the holes for the drivers on the front panels of the cabinets. You will need to cut four holes for each cabinet: two on the top half and two on the bottom half of the panel. The holes should be spaced evenly along the vertical centerline of the panel, with a distance of 15 cm between them. The diameter of each hole should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the driver (in this case, 22 cm). You can use a router or a jigsaw to cut the holes. Make sure to measure and mark the centers of the holes before cutting them.
Step 3: Assemble the Cabinets
The third step is to assemble the cabinets using wood glue and screws. You will need to glue and screw the side panels to the front and back panels, forming a rectangular box. Make sure that the edges are aligned and flush. You can also reinforce the joints with corner braces or brackets if desired. Repeat this process for all four cabinets.
Step 4: Install the Drivers
The fourth step is to install the drivers into the cabinets. You will need to insert each driver into its corresponding hole on the front panel of the cabinet, making sure that it fits snugly. You can also apply some sealant around the edges of the driver to prevent air leaks. Then, you will need to secure each driver with screws from behind. Repeat this process for all 16 drivers.
